FormerpolicedetectiveAdrianMonk(TonyShalhoub),whosephotographicmemoryandamazingabilitytopiecetogethertinycluesmadehimalocallegend,hassufferedfromintensifiedobsessive-compulsivedisorderandavarietyofphobiassincetheunsolvedmurderofhiswife,Trudy,in1997.NowonpsychiatricleavefromtheSanFranciscoPoliceDepartmentandworkingasafreelancedetective/consultantondifficultcases,Monkhopestoconvincehisformerboss,CaptainLelandStottlemeyer(TedLevine),toallowhimtoreturntotheforce.Stottlemeyer,whowaveredbetweenadmirationforMonkandannoyanceathiseccentricitiesduringthefirstseason,isbecomingmoreofafriendtoMonkastheseriesdevelops,frequentlycallinghimintohelp,asmuchforMonk'sbenefitasforhisown.However,heknowsMonk'slimitationsaswellashisstrengthsandmaystillharbordoubtsaboutthewisdomofallowingMonktocarryagunorsubdueaperpetrator.Stottlemeyer'ssecond-in-command,LieutenantRandallDisher(JasonGray-Stanford),alsoseemstobedevelopingbothadmirationandcompassionforthemanheoncelabeled"thedefectivedetective."
